Introduction

We believe that the only missionary sending agency authorized by God is the local New Testament church. The Lord Jesus Christ gave the Great Commission to the church alone.

We believe the best way for a church to proceed in sending a missionary to the field is:
1.     Verify the missionary's salvation and call to service.
2.     Insure he is qualified, trained and licensed or ordaind.
3.     Support him with offerings and prayers.
4.     Receive funds for him and send them to him on the field.
5.     Assist him in record keeping and with other needs that may arise.

We strongly believe that the local church is the final authority on all issues not spelled out in Scripture. We feel that there is Biblical precedence for a local church to avoid binding affiliations with conventions, associations and fellowships. However, a church may feel that it needs assistance in the area of missions (processing funds, advice, etc.). Nonetheless, we do advise that all such assistance may be obtained from experienced pastors rather than from boards and believe that church members are normally able to care for all the needs of it's missionaries.

The Great Commission

"... Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations ..." (Luke 24:46-47)

"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." (Matthew 28:19-20)

"... Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." (Mark 16:15-16)

"... Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained." (John 20:21-23)

"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

Who Was The Great Commission Given To?

There is not a word that even hints at a mission board in the above passages that present the Great Commission. The Lord Jesus was adressing the apostles who were the first members of the Lord's church and they were it's leaders after His departure. The Bible declairs that God set the apostles in the church first. 1 Corinthians 12:28 says:

"... God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers ..."

Lord Jesus Christ was speaking to His assembled apostles, therefore He was speaking to His church for a church is an assembly called out to do business.

The words "ye" and "you" carry the plural meaning of the Greek. The words "thee" and "thou" are used if it is singular. Note the uses of "ye" and "you" in the Great Commission:

"Go YE therefore ..." (Matthew 28:19)

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded YOU: and, lo, I am with YOU alway ..." (Matthew 28:20)

"... Go YE into all the world ..." (Mark 16:15)

"... Peace be unto YOU: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I YOU." (John 20:21)

"... YE shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and YE shall be witnesses unto me ..." (Acts 1:8)

Not only was the apostolic church authorized, but also like churches that sprang from them for Christ said:

"Go ye ... and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." (Matthew 28:19-20)

No individual missionary has the right to go out without the authority of the local church. No individual or group outside the church has a right to send a missionary out. This authority was vested in the local church alone. That is not to say that groups and individuals cannot be used within the context of the local church to help missionaries.

Also speaking of future churches including the final church in Heaven the Lord said:

"I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." (John 10:14-16)

Lastly Acts 1:8 says:

"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."

There is only one way "YE," the church, can be witnesses unto Christ "both" locally and elsewhere including "the uttermost part of the earth" simultaneously. That is by a teem effort with some in the church sending and others going. The senders are going by way of proxies.

Problems With Mission Boards

We can see a number of potential evils in using mission boards in our day:

1.   Boards often lead to denominationalism.
2.   It can weaken doctrine by causing a false unity based on fellowship rather than sound Biblical doctrine.
3.   If the board is an "Exempt Organization" it will cause an unequal yoke with Caesar under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
4.   Boards may instill loyalty on the basis of group insurance, medical benefits, etc. rather that dedication to the Lord and His Word.

Conclusion

"... Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations ..." (Luke 24:46-47)

"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" (Romans 10:13-15)

"... Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." (Mark 16:15-16)
